1GOAL and the Confederation of African Football - African Cup of Nations 2012, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon - Educate Girls!
27 January 2012
Following the successful 1GOAL campaign at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, 1GOAL is delighted to be working with the Confederation of African Football in 2012 for the African Cup of Nations to highlight the desperate need to realize the right of girls everywhere to have a quality education.

1GOAL is an official campaign of the Confederation of African Football and together with the African Network Campaign for Education For All (ANCEFA) we will be campaigning to raise the profile of girls’ education amongst the public and world leaders.

Why girls’ education?

1GOAL believes that everyone has the right to good quality, free education – boys and girls alike. But right now, girls are falling behind and the majority of children out of school are girls. While there has been progress to get more girls enrolled in primary school, they are still more likely than boys to drop out of school before completion. In 47 out of 54 African countries, girls have less than a 50% chance of going to secondary school.

The benefits of sending girls to school are huge:
  • A girl in Africa who receives an education is three times less likely to contract HIV/AIDS.
  • A child whose mother cannot read or write is 50% more likely to die before the age of five.
  • Educating women breaks the cycle of illiteracy forever – literate mothers do not bring up illiterate children.

This is why we are shifting our attention to girls’ education for the 2012 1GOAL campaign, impressing upon football fans and politicians alike that girls should be sent to school.

We will be lobbying national presidents in Africa to establish a forum on girls’ education during the African Union summer summit 2012 and to commit to ensuring equity for girls in education – including a commitment to safe and good quality spaces to learn.

‘There is no tool for education more effective than education of girls’
Kofi Annan

We hope that you will join 1GOAL to support this important cause in 2012.
1GOAL: Education for All
1GOAL is a campaign seizing the power of football to get all children into school and learning. Run by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), 1GOAL mobilised millions to help ensure Education For All is a lasting legacy of the FIFA World Cup. We continue to call on world leaders to make education a reality for 69 million children by 2015.
