CAF, ANCEFA and the Global Campaign for Education’s 1GOAL campaign demand education for girls
10 February 2012
As football fans across Africa focus on the final games of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, the Confederation of African Football, ANCEFA and GCE are taking this opportunity to highlight girls’ education through the 1GOAL campaign.

A report by the Global Campaign for Education and RESULTS in 2011 found that in 47 of 54 African countries girls have less than a 50% chance of attending secondary school. The impact of leaving girls without education is vast – at its most stark, a child whose mother can read is twice as likely to survive beyond the age of five, and girls who can read are three times less likely to contract HIV in later life. With girls falling drastically behind boys, it is timely that CAF and 1GOAL will be working together to highlight their plight using the power of football.

On 7 February, over 100 students and teachers from St Jean Primary School, Libreville, Gabon – co-host of the 2012 tournament – welcomed CAF, ANCEFA and GCE to talk about the campaign. ANCEFA and GCE emphasised that quality, public education for every girl and boy is vital – but girls are falling behind. Together with Gabonese football stars Yves Bitseki Moto and Charly Moussono, CAF General Secretary Hicham El Amrani stated that CAF would be giving this important campaign its full support.

The campaign is asking the public to back the campaign and demand that African leaders discuss girls’ education and make it a priority nationally and across the African continent during the next African Union summit, to be hosted by Malawi in June 2012.
